Every puzzle begins with a story.
Kinfolk Keepsake was created from a simple idea: Black life, history, places, traditions, and everyday moments deserve to be beautifully preserved, celebrated, and pieced together.
Our artwork is designed to feel like more than an illustration. Each piece is developed as a Story World—a richly imagined place filled with architecture, people, traditions, landmarks, small moments, and details that invite you to look a little longer.
Because around here, the picture is never just the picture.
The Story is Ours.
The Vision Comes First
Before artwork is created, each Kinfolk Keepsake piece begins with a concept.
That concept might come from a historic Black community, a family tradition, a cultural celebration, a beloved place, or an everyday experience that feels familiar across generations.
From there, the world begins to take shape.
We consider:
-The time and place
-Architecture and surroundings
-Clothing and hairstyles
-Cultural and historical details
-Community traditions
-The people who belong in the scene
-Small stories happening throughout the artwork
-The feeling we want the finished piece to leave with you
Some scenes are nostalgic. Some are joyful. Some celebrate history. Others simply capture the beauty of Black everyday life.
Every one begins with intention.

Kinfolk Keepsake artwork is created through an AI-assisted creative process.
Artificial intelligence is one of the tools used to help visually develop our original concepts, but it is not the storyteller.
Each piece is conceived, researched, art-directed, reviewed, revised, and curated by Kinfolk Keepsake.
That means the process often includes multiple rounds of refinement to adjust composition, architecture, clothing, skin tones, hairstyles, historical details, perspective, lighting, scenery, character placement, signage, and countless small elements within the scene.
An image may be generated quickly.
A Kinfolk Keepsake Story World is not.
Art Direction Matters
We have a very specific visual language for Kinfolk Keepsake.
Our scenes are intentionally expansive and story-rich, with the environment playing just as important a role as the people within it.
You may notice:

-Small, understated figures rather than portrait-style characters
-A natural range of Black skin tones, hairstyles, ages, and experiences

The goal is to create artwork that feels nostalgic and familiar while telling stories that have too often been missing from the traditional puzzle aisle.
Details Get a Second Look
AI-assisted artwork can introduce inconsistencies, which is why review and revision are such important parts of our process.
Before a piece becomes a Kinfolk Keepsake product, we look closely.
And then we look again.
We review details such as:
-Hands, faces, and body positioning
-Building structure and perspective
-Repeated or misplaced people and objects
-Skin tones and hair representation
-Clothing and period details
-Signs, lettering, and dates
-Historical and cultural context
-Scene continuity
-Overall composition
-Print and puzzle suitability
-Our standard is simple:

Technology may help create the canvas, but care, judgment, research, revision, and storytelling shape the finished work.
Research Is Part of the Artwork
When a collection is inspired by a real place, period, community, or tradition, research becomes part of the creative process.
We study the details that help a scene feel grounded in its story—from architecture and businesses to clothing, community life, traditions, geography, and historical context.
Our artwork is interpretive rather than documentary. It is created to evoke the spirit and story of a place, not to function as a photographic reconstruction.
When historical accuracy matters, we work to approach the subject thoughtfully and respectfully.
Why We Create This Way
For generations, traditional American puzzles have celebrated beautiful towns, family gatherings, holidays, countryside scenes, neighborhood life, and nostalgic moments.
Kinfolk Keepsake simply asks:
What happens when Black stories are allowed to live inside those beautiful worlds, too?
We want children to see places their grandparents talked about.
We want adults to recognize pieces of home.
We want families to gather around a table and discover stories together.
We want Black history to include joy.
